My home sweet home.

I like to think that home is where you make it. Russell and I have moved 6 times in almost 4 years and everywhere we go we always manage to make it feels like home. I feel especially blessed right now for the home we are living in. We live in this wonderful main level of a little character home in a very neat neighborhood. We probably have the best landlord ever and he let me pick paint colours before we moved in to have the place updated. A few things I love about our rental: the amazing light fixture in the kitchen {I want to take it with me when we move one day}, the hardwood floors, big living room windows, and most importantly the people I get to share it all with.

There is something special in the air during the winter, something magical about the light, even at noon day. Snow makes the world almost monochromatic and everything shimmers in the snow. Darren Roberts and his little family just seemed to glow on this chili winter day; especially him and his wife!

Waterton Winter.

Russell's family lives in the foothills just north of Waterton, so visiting this amazing national park is a part of our usual wanderings every year during the summer & winter. This year I was particularly excited about going to Waterton, because there are always a lot of deer in the town site, and Porter loves deer. It is one of the many words he can sign and one of the few words he can say {minus the r}. We were a little shocked though this year by the lack of snow, but we enjoyed the deer and Cameron falls.

Over the Christmas break Russell and I got the opportunity to spend 24hrs all by our selves {it was my Christmas present to Russell}. It was splendid! My dad owns a condo in Canmore and so we were able to stay out there for free. We spent the day puttzing around the town site, bought hot chocolate, played darts, and then went out for a fancy dinner. We finished our getaway with a soak in the hot tub and then a movie! On our way home we stopped on the side of the road a couple of times so I could photograph {despite the terribly cold wind}. What a treat that was! Alberta we love you and miss you!

A new year.

I am excited for a new year, I think it is going to be a good one! 2011 was a bit of a challenging year for out little family. We made the decision to move to Saskatoon, far away from family, again. We are now settled and getting into a nice groove here. Although we miss the mountains, family, and friends, we are finding our place in Saskatoon. Here is to hoping for another great {maybe not so hectic} year.

Also, a friend of mine and fellow film photographer, Darren Roberts, offered to photograph my sweet family in exchange for photographing his. Here is one photo of my sweetheart and I, you can see more here. Photographs of the Roberts family will be coming soon; it was such a fun and crisp day!

Winter's Chill.

My holidays have begun and I am enjoying the winter's chill as I spend time with family! Tonight, we will be celebrating Christmas with my dad, and I am especially grateful for my family and feeling extremely blessed. I hope everyone is enjoying themselves as much as I am! An Everyday Hero. {winner}

I feel so privileged to announce the winner of the Everyday Hero giveaway. I want to first thank everyone who participated, thank-you! and so here we go, the winner is: the entry by Amy Wilde, who nominated her cousin Brynn. Here is her story {it is a must read!}:

"My (then 10 year old) cousin, Brynn was reading a book one afternoon when she felt a little bump in the bottom of her foot. She told my Aunt, and my Aunt said it was probably from wearing flip flops or something, didn’t really think anything of it. Brynn was adamant that she wanted a doctor to look at it, so in order to put her at ease, Christy, my Aunt, called to book an appointment. The doctor is a family friend so he said to just come in and he would have a quick look. He didn’t tell them this then, but he was worried when he saw it. Brynn had a CT scan, and an MRI the next day, and an appointment for a biopsy at the children’s hospital was scheduled for a couple days later.

They told them there was only a 5% chance it was cancerous, but a few days after the procedure, I was at their house, the phone rang and my Aunt came into the room crying. It was cancer. Brynn cried and cried, and was asking, “Am I going to die, will my hair fall out, will I have to miss school?” All day Brynn had visitors, as family and friends heard the news. And that night Brynn told her family, it would all be okay, and that she didn’t want anyone to be sad. That was July 2010.

The type of cancer Brynn was diagnosed with is rhabdomyosarcoma. Over the past 16 months, she has endured Chemotherapy, Radiation, and surgeries. Watching her {and her family} go through all of this has had such an impact on me. I feeling like saying “she is so positive” is such an understatement. She has endured so much pain, she has had to sacrifice so many things, she has watched friends she has made at the hospital pass away, including her dog. I feel like she has had to go from a 10 year old to an adult. But through it all she still manages to keep herself and everyone around her smiling.

She finished treatment in September 2011, and will hopefully be able to go back to school a little bit in January. This whole time their family has been spread out- Brynn and her parents in Calgary and my other 3 cousins at my parents or grandmas. Now they are finally back together under one roof! They still have a couple years of follow up testing to go through, but hopefully the worst is behind! I think about Brynn whenever I feel overwhelmed, and I know I can get through anything!"

Sharing this story has just made me even more excited for Christmas. Porter is in love with our Christmas tree and is excited too! As you can see though our ornaments are now on the top third of the tree for safety reasons {they are my grandmother's antique glass balls}.

I love to create! If I don't have some sort of a project on the go or some sort of goal to accomplish, I feel lazy! Creating is just a part of me, it is why I got an art degree and why I continue to find new ways to create that fit into my lifestyle. My mother got me a sewing machine last year for my Birthday/Christmas, and I have thoroughly enjoyed learning the art of sewing. I always said as soon as I was done university I was going to learn to sew, and I did. I still need to learn to sew cloths, something like a dress, for myself, but for now I have enjoyed simple little projects like these two: baby shoes and a little girl pinafore. The pinafore is made from a vintage fabric that I bought at a yard sale this summer and I think it is perfect for this little pattern. It is so easy to whip together; I have already made a few this year as gifts and will probably make many more. The baby shoe pattern is on sale right now too if you are interested; they are a little tedious to make, but rewarding.

Porter Walking.

Today Porter decided that today was the day he would start walking. He has only been taking the random step here and there, and then early this afternoon he just up and decided to start walking. After about an hour he had figured out how to turn around and how to pick up a toy and carry it to us. So much fun to see him finally reach this milestone. Plus he looks so adorable with his little waddle.

Her family lives in the states and she is currently in Salt Lake City in intensive care as she fights for her life. This was probably the most thoughtful gift he could have given me; it showed me he understood and supported me in my love of photography. HAPPY HALLOWEEN! So last minute we decided to be incredible and pull these outfits off for halloween. This was all Russell's idea so, I stayed up late Friday night making them. We bought red shirts from thrift, I made the logos with cheap felt, added the black collars, and sewed it all together. I think they turned out pretty incredible! and isn't Porters hair just amazing!

The Sweetest Moments.

I am so blessed! I have a sweet little one year old son who adores me {I feel like I can say that with confidence}. Recently he has been a little more needy. Tonight he woke up at 10:00pm, if I had left him for another minute or two he probably would have just gone back to sleep on his own, but I decided to go in and give him a little help. As soon as I picked him up he was quiet, he put his head on my shoulder and his body went heavy as he drifted back to sleep in my arms while we sat in the rocking chair. I don't think there is another feeling better than that on this earth. Its not often that I get to hold him while he is sleeping anymore, so I savored it. I just held him for a good long moment. Tears welled up in my eyes as I realized how much I love that little boy. He brings more joy and happiness into my life than I really ever thought possible. Although some days are challenging and I wonder what I am doing, it is some how all worth it just for that one moment; holding my little boy, his head resting on my shoulder, so peaceful and still, so quiet and cute, I can't imagine my life without him.
Porter I love you, and I will love you forever!

I am going to miss the warmth of summer. The thing that makes summer so wonderful is being outside so much! spending half your day in a bathing suit, jumping in and out of the lake, hiking, laying in the grass, and all the fruit! As much as I love summer though, I do enjoy fall and winter and they make you appreciate those short summer months even more!

The geeky stuff: the black & white image was taken with my dehel and the bottom two were taken with my lomo. {Oh and I think this would be the perfect addition to my lomo}.

I gave Porter his first haircut last week. It was exciting, challenging, and a little sad, but I got rid of his little mullet and his hair isn't in his eyes anymore, so I think I did a pretty descent job {in spit of Porter's wariness}.

I can hardly believe my eyes, my little boy is 1 year old today. It is hard to believe that one whole entire year has gone by, yet I can still remember the day he was born like it was yesterday. I have such sweet memories from our first moments with Porter and his sweet little spirit. I am glad I can look back on those memories fondly! I am glad Porter still snuggles with me once in awhile, in between his adventures and exploring. It is a wonder to me that every stage a child goes through is still such an amazing thing, each new skill they learn, or law of nature they discover. It never ceases to amazing me the little wonders children are, especially my little Porter on his 1st birthday. Porter we love you so much, every whit, through and through, head to toe, every little movement, sound, and look. You will always be our sweet little baby boy!

So last weekend we entered Porter into the Saskatoon Baby Crawl. Porter did so well. He won his first two heats with flying colours qualifying him for the final. He was all ready to go and took off into the lead, in my head I was thinking "oh my goodness we are going to win" and then all of a sudden he just stopped and started crying; he got 4th place. bye bye $1000. We were a little sad but it was fun and we still love Porter .

Echo Lake is one of my favorite places on earth. Every year my family gets together here and it is always a good time. Echo was a no boating lake this summer, because the water was so high. You might think this would have put a damper on things, but i think it just made us relax a little more than we usually do. It was nice to just play in the water goof around with the kids. this is my favorite, and one of the few photos we have of russell as a baby. we still have the blanket and the overalls that he is wearing in it so i decided to try re-enact the event. both the blanket and the overalls are faded quite a bit and the lighting is different, but i think they still look a like; although i am surpirsed at how dark porters hair has stayed.

call for desperate measures. why wont can't my child learn not to wake up before 5:45 in the morning. on the rare occasion i can get him to go back to sleep, but not often enough. he wakes up early but is by no means ready to start his day, he needs more sleep. he is cranky if he starts his day this early and then the entire days schedule is off. what to do. i feel like i have tried many things, but i am now completely open to any suggestions. we need sleep!

i grew up in a big family. we didn't always get along when we were younger, but now that we are older i am so grateful to be a part of a big family. i have built-in friends and that is irreplaceable.

my big sister is now pregnant with her 4th baby and even though 4 doesn't sound like a big number, we all know that taking care of even one baby is no small task. i am so glad that my sister is having another baby, because i know that her kids will appreciate the joy of family and built-in friends just like i do.

this was russell's birthday present; he had no idea that I was going to cut and die my hair. it was so fun. my friend did my make-up and dressed me up and then i surprised russell when he got home, we even went out on a little date. for the first few days every time I looked in the mirror I felt like I was looking at someone else, making such a drastic change was very liberating. you should try it some time. change!

yes this is me in the photo below. i cut my hair, chopped it actually, and i dyed it. it was very liberating! so, what else is new in our lives? well lots! russell, porter, and i have moved to saskatoon. porter has now figured out how to crawl after learning to walk along furniture and he enjoys swimming which we have been trying to do at least once a week, along with going to the park a lot; porter loves the swing!

i can hardly believe it, porter is 7 months old and standing up to anything he can grab. it is a little scary since his ambition is greater than his ability, but after a fee bumps and one goose egg later, he is already getting much better at standing. he seems to have grown up so much in the past couple of weeks. he is starting to finally get the hang of solid food; he always wants to be right beside me if i am eating something, so the other day i peeled a big carrot for him to gnaw and suck on.

my mom and i spent a couple of days at echo lake this past week and our little trip was topped off with this incredible rainbow! there were two complete rainbows; pictures can do it justice it was so amazing!

as some of you may know, my husband enjoys weight lifting and earlier this year decided he would train and compete in a body building competition. well he just competed in the IDFA body building competition in calgary last weekend and he placed 3rd overall in his catergory. he started training in january and since then a lot of chicken, rice, and vegetables went into this man. if i could just say, i think he looks mighty fine!

this has been a real labor of love; refinishing 2 old solid wooden dressers. the taller one was found at an antique shop and the lower one was found on kijiji for $20 {such a steal!}. after acquiring these two needed pieces of furniture for storage space in our bedroom, i almost instantly imagined them together, matching, side by side. so... i picked out paint, heavy cream from the martha stewart collection, and then i found the knobs from anthropologie. it has taken quite some time to get them to this point, but here they are, finally, side by side. oh and please don't judge my terribly messy bedroom in the before pictures.

conor is my cousin and he has one of the sweetest wives, katie. she is so creative and i wish we lived closer together, because i am sure we would have too much fun together. i was so glad they were able to stop in and see us on there trip home. here is there sweet little family!

i am sorry if you are sick of seeing this little man, but i could never get sick of him. so enjoy the plethora of porter. porter is sitting up by himself now and going up on his hands and knees {i think he will be crawling within the next month}. some of porters favorite things to do is look out the front window and bath time {don't you just love his long curly mohawk}. and today i sat porter down in front of a mirror and he seems to have found himself a new friend.

i cut my hair! it felt so good to do. i needed to do it. i knew i wouldn't be able to put it in a ponytail and that i would need to shower and do my hair most days, but that's not such a bad thing.

little.projects

so i am finally getting some little projects done that have been on the back burner for awhile. with the help of my wonderful mom and porter, we made bumper pads for porters crib. porter has been rolling in his crib and hitting his little head on the bars, so i figured it was time to finish this project. i am so happy with the way they turned out. i used a beautiful cream cotton fabric and some warm gray thread to go with the crib and then i quilted them.

i also realized that i haven't really showcased porter's room; and it is my favorite room in the house. i love the colours in this room, and it just came together so well. the crib is the sparrow crib from oeuf and the crib sheet is from dwell studios. i made the mobile and the winnie the pooh sketches were mine that used to hang in my room {my mom got them for england}. the painting hanging on the wall was also mine, it is "little rascals" by corinne hartley. the little red chair was found at an antique shop and leaning against it is russell's play gun. the dresser in the corner was found at a garage sale for $4 and the rocking chair was found at the cardston bargain barn for $5. and pillow in the corner of porter's crib is one of my daily reminders that motherhood is so worth it.

making my home feel nice is something that is really important to me. i finally made some pillows, new pillow cases, and soon i will show you the new dressers that i have been refinishing to pull the whole room together.

what a stud. porter turned 5 months on sunday and he is taking this growing-up thing seriously, already trying to be like daddy, hehe. i am pretty sure this little boy is going to be crawling very soon. crazy! my little boy is growing way to fast.

so i had a great day on saturday. 1.got some film developed, 2.finally took out some old cameras that i inherited, 3.photographed for 2 hours, with film! only to learn 2 hours later that the new camera i was testing was set on multiple exposure. woops!
